How to Measure Your Windows for Perfectly Fitted Blinds

Measuring your windows accurately is crucial for getting perfectly fitted blinds. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you measure your windows correctly:

  1. Gather Your Tools: You'll need a steel measuring tape, a pencil, and a notepad or a digital device to jot down measurements.

  2. Decide Inside or Outside Mount: Determine whether you want to mount the blinds inside the window frame (inside mount) or outside the frame on the wall (outside mount). This decision will affect how you take measurements.

  3. Inside Mount Measurements: - Width: Measure the width of the window at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest of these measurements to ensure that the blinds fit inside the window frame without scraping. - Height: Measure the height of the window at three points: left, center, and right. Again, use the smallest measurement to ensure the blinds fit properly.

  4. Outside Mount Measurements: - Width: Measure the width of the area you want the blinds to cover. If there's a window frame, measure from the outside edge of the frame on one side to the outside edge on the other side. Add a few inches on each side for overlap and to minimize light gaps. - Height: Measure from the top of the window opening to where you want the bottom of the blinds to hang. Add a few inches to ensure proper coverage and light control.

  5. Considerations for Special Windows: - For bay or bow windows, measure each section individually and note any variations in width or height. - For windows with obstructions like handles or cranks, measure the distance from the obstruction to the nearest edge of the window frame. This will ensure that the blinds can be operated smoothly.

  6. Double-Check Your Measurements: Measure twice to ensure accuracy. Mistakes in measurements can lead to ill-fitting blinds.

  7. Note Down the Measurements: Write down all measurements clearly and label them according to each window. This will help you when ordering or purchasing blinds.

  8. Consult with the Blind Retailer or Manufacturer: Before making a purchase, it's a good idea to consult with the retailer or manufacturer to ensure you have the correct measurements and understand any specific requirements for their blinds.

By following these steps, you should be able to measure your windows accurately and ensure that your blinds fit perfectly once installed.
